In the US, it made #1 in a Rolling Stone reader’s poll of the “10 Best Britpop Songs”. NME placed it at #1 in their 100 Best Tracks of the Nineties in 2012. BBC 6 Music named it the “top Britpop anthem” in 2014. It topped the year-end polls in 1995, it topped the decade-end polls when those came out, and it regularly tops the nostalgia polls that the British press regularly regurgitate. The term for this is “class tourism” or “slumming”. The track is about people of a certain upper class attempting to move into the class of “common people”, essentially moving from glamour to poverty. It was the lead single off of their fifth album “Different Class”. “Common People” is written by all members of English alternative rock band “Pulp”, who were most present and popular t in the mid to late nineties, and from Sheffield in the north of England.
